Where History Lives on the Banks of the Des Moines
Nestled along the scenic banks of the Des Moines River, Bentonsport is one of Van Buren County’s earliest settlements and a true gem of Southeast Iowa. At the heart of this historic village stands the Mason House Inn, an antique hotel built in 1846 by skilled Mormon craftsmen traveling from Nauvoo, Illinois. Originally serving the many steamboat passengers along the river, the inn has worn many hats over the years—operating as a hospital on three separate occasions and even serving as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Nearly two centuries later, the Mason House Inn remains a welcoming destination, offering travelers the chance to step back in time while enjoying the comforts of a fully-functioning Bed & Breakfast. Guests can relax by the river, stroll through the charming village, and immerse themselves in the stories of Iowa’s past. As with any historic landmark, ongoing restoration and upgrades are essential to preserving its beauty and history for generations to come. We invite you to book your stay today and experience the serene riverfront charm of the Mason House Inn—or consider supporting our preservation efforts through a donation to keep this beloved piece of history alive.
